Rotherham District Civic Society will lead a tour around Rotherham Town Centre to discover three blue plaques dedicated to Rotherham Women. Just arrive at the visitors centre on High Street at 11am. Exploring the lives of:
Ann Hinchcliffe – (1805-1873) After her husband’s death she found herself with three young children and developed his bookselling business on High Street into a thriving concern. After a partnership with Henry Epworth she diversified into printing and stationery and this led to them publishing the first edition of the Rotherham and Masbrough Advertiser and continuing for 8 years.
Rose Hestletine – (1822-1917) Born in Rotherham. Her father became Manager of the Sheffield and Rotherham Bank (more recently RBS on the High Street). She married the famous novelist Anthony Trollope in Rotherham Minster (then Rotherham Parish Church) in June 1844. A strong-minded and influential figure, she actively supported and encouraged Anthony Trollope’s literary career.
Dorothy Greene – (1899-1998) Daughter of a miner who was killed in a pit explosion in 1911, she worked for RMBC for 40 years and was instrumental in the excavation of the Roman Fort at Templeborough. She was awarded an Honorary Degree by Sheffield University in 1960 for her research work and given the Freedom of Rotherham Borough in 1971 for her work in promoting and identifying the importance of Rotherham Heritage.
